There are at least two reasons why this compilation should be a good listen. One: I like label compilations for some geeky reason that I haven't fathomed yet. Two: Whimsical is an indie label from Edinburgh and Scotland have got an impressive track record with this kind of stuff over the past ten, twenty years. It's by no means a flawless collection, it would be hard for most labels to put together 21 songs and for the listener to like all of them, but label founder Ewan McKenzie has an exciting roster here of indie and folk from all over the country (And NYC), largely influenced by classic rock and pop.

Whimsical's first ever signing The Harmonic Storm, for example, are what happens when you copy early Beatles and early Dylan at the same time. Or Lemanis, whose drifting 'Laughing, Smiling, Joking' is what grunge would have sounded like had it been invented by Brian Wilson and not grimy men in plaid. Joe Viglione's jerky NYC no wave falls in between the Ramones and Sonic Youth, while Subconscious and Emporium (Two ex-Subconscious members) are Edinburgh's answer to the Super Furry Animals but applying their own voice to playful, trippy, magpie pop.

There are some genuine originals here too, such as The Idea's daft psychedelic journeys with Casio keyboards and the angsty folk of Karle Odegaard. 'The Sad Thing Is It Is Sad At All' collides two very different worlds to dazzling effect, the gritty Wild West and the exotica of the Middle East. The undeniable stars, however, are New York's fun(ky) experimentalists the Westport Sunrise Sessions, with their weird clanging beats, falsetto harmonies and old school MCing. It's TV On The Radio with no David Sitek production and no money.

Most likely for success though are gloomy, Editor's style post-punks Jack Butler and Alfie Kingston's piano driven soft rock in the mould of The Fray. They might not be the two most original artists on 'Elevate.', but any success for Whimsical would be well deserved.

Stacie Rose has created a mature and authoritative gem on her third full-length disc augmenting her long-time producer, Robert L. Smith, with co-producer Jeff Allen. There are many stand-out tracks here, "Run Out" has a little nod to Janis Joplin (not in vocal or sound, but in spirit) - very hooky, as is "Mr. & Mrs. Happily Ever After", nice sequencing two as the pair of songs are different but work well together. There's the intriguing "Not Listening", the jazzy and quite moody "December" and "Love Saves" which actually sounds like "Love waves...", a nice little Lady Mondegreen, misheard lyric. You can check out my previous review of Rose's THIS IS MINE CD from 2002 on AllMusic
and SHADOW & SPLENDOR. SHOTGUN DAISY
is a beautiful component to the triology and points out a good direction for this important artist's future.

Imagine Ornette Coleman's band (sans the alto sax) laid back with a bit of Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson in its place and you'll get just a light touch and taste of what unfolds on this 64 minute and 46 second masterpiece. Recorded in July of 2008 in Luna Studios, Tel Aviv, Israel, Vladimir Katz's brilliantly coy piano dresses the Noiberg original, "Alone", in melodic wonder as the bass of Avri Borochov works alongside it. Hadar's flute is mournful, however the accompaniment is not, though it does get dramatic as the song takes a variety of paths over the close to nine minutes. All eight tracks are an adventure and the shortest, the Turkish traditional "Yemen Elleri", still comes in at over five minutes. "Upside Down Kind 'o' Life", another Hadar Noiberg original, is eleven and a half minutes and the longest essay here. It is amazing stuff that will appeal to the Tull fans and beyond. OK, every artist that picks up a flute is going to get compared to or find a reference to Ian Anderson, and why not? Anderson highly commercialized Rahsaan Roland Kirk's moods and the Noiberg/Katz pairing drift away from all of those possible influences into a magical land that is part New Age, some jazz and lots of heart.
This is a highly recommended disc and Kimberley might be playing some of it on her new Living In The Now/Breakthrough Talk show on Tuesday, December 2.

A song from the streets, Meta sings "He's so high, sitting on the corner stone" as the elegant guitars work the groove, though five minutes the song coasts with a magnetic undertow, a catchy verse and straight ahead - and stern - chorus:
"playing hide & seek with the cops/make money or die". The stellar production has guitar scrapes that buoy the lead guitar sound. It's an amazing journey deserving of spin after spin.

3.Hello Again 3:51
With that great Johnny Nash style from his March 1973 hit cover of Bob Marley's
"Stir It Up" and at three minutes and fifty one seconds Publicity Machine is pushing track 3, "Hello Again" as the radio track with crossover potential.

Established in 1976 as the promotional side of our record company, The Publicity Machine maintains our contacts in the industry by keeping active at conventions - Joe Viglione speaking on November 4 at the IBS Boston regional, attending the Billboard Hip Hop / R & B convention in Atlanta, September, 2006, and speaking at the IBS National Convention in March of 2006.
